The lead economic story last week was President Obama's decision to renominate Ben Bernanke for a second term as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. This decision was hardly a surprise (but it did come earlier than expected), as Mr. Bernanke has been widely credited with being the one most responsible for bringing the economy back from the brink of collapse, and his renomination was generally viewed in a favorable light. Last week's news also included some better-than-expected economic data as well as the sobering announcement that the federal deficit would be $2 trillion higher over the next 10 years compared to earlier estimates. In the equity markets, stocks moved up grudgingly for the week, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing 0.4% to 9,544, the S&P 500 Index advancing 0.3% to 1,029 and the Nasdaq Composite rising 0.4% to 2,029.

Following a month-long correction, which appeared to be induced more by profittaking than by any reversal in economic trends, equities rallied strongly last week to approach their previous highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 7.3% to 8,744, the S&P 500 Index advanced 7% to 940 and the Nasdaq Composite added 7.4% to close the week at 1,887. US earnings surprised on the upside last week, building on the string of supportive economic data seen over the past few months. As a result, the market averages managed to erase much of the losses from the prior several weeks' correction. Equities held up even as the flight-to-safety premium in Treasury securities staged a small rebound.

Black Rock - Investment Commentary
Last week was a difficult one for equity markets as the correction that began several weeks ago continued. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.7% to 8,147, the S&P 500 Index declined 1.8% to 879 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 2.3% to close at 1,756. All market sectors were down, with the more cyclical areas of the market (basic materials, energy and industrials) falling the most and the more defensive areas (healthcare, utilities and consumer staples) falling the least. Following last week’s declines, markets are now at their lowest levels since April.

BlackRock - “LA RENTA VARIABLE PUEDE REGISTRAR UNA SUBIDA PORCENTUAL DE DOS DÍGITOS EN 2009”
Madrid, 7 de julio de 2009 - Según Robert C. Doll, Vicepresidente y Director Global de Inversiones de Renta Variable de BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE: BLK), la economía mundial sigue frágil, pero lo peor de la recesión ya "se ve por el retrovisor" y la mejora de la situación económica en el segundo semestre del 2009 contribuirá a elevar el precio de los valores y la renta variable probablemente supere a todas las demás clases de activos en los próximos doce meses.
Doll considera que la renta variable de Estados Unidos y la mayoría de los mercados puede registrar una ganancia porcentual de dos dígitos en este año, y que los valores estadounidenses superarán a los europeos y los mercados emergentes a los desarrollados en el conjunto del año 2009.

Hace menos de un año, la inflación había llegado a nuevos máximos cíclicos en muchas economías. En los países del G7, el IPC llegó al 4,6% en julio, su nivel más alto desde principios de la década de 1990. Desde entonces, sin embargo, la situación se ha transformado. La inflación en el G7 ha caído hasta poco más de cero, su nivel más bajo en varias décadas, y la tasa es similar en muchas economías emergentes. De hecho, en los próximos meses, es prácticamente inevitable que la inflación se vuelva negativa en muchos países. En realidad, este proceso ya está en marcha en algunos casos, en particular en EE.UU., pero también en el Reino Unido.
